Description and Objectives

The descriptions of the channels (meridians) used to treat in Chinese medicine are one of the most fundamental, useful and precious parts of Chinese medical theory. Channel theory has been very commonly misunderstood and is much more than the “lines of energy” across the body. This course is designed for body-workers and massage therapists with or with out previous experience with these ideas. The goal of the course is to demystify the channel system and give the student a thorough description of this very grounded, common sense and profound way of seeing the human body in both health and illness and open the doorway to using this knowledge to better understand and help the people you work on.

Course contents

  • History of channel theory from the ancient times to today, how the transmission from Chinese to western cultures changed thinking about channels
  • Original descriptions of the channel system and specific pathways in the Huangdi Neijing
  • Functions of the channel system in health and illness
  • The anatomy and physiology of the movement of blood in the channels
  • Understanding channels through posture and movement
  • Links to modern research and developments

About the teaching method

The channels are physically real. It is a misconception that they are esoteric “lines of energy” so the best way to know them is through palpation and movement. In addition to lectures on theory, this course will give students opportunity to fully palpate the channels and feel them move in oneself and observe them move in others.

Evaluation

There is no evaluation for this course.
To obtain a certificate of completion, students must attend the whole course (15 hours).

Jingluo Qigong

The Channel Theory course provides a thorough introduction to channel theory with a hands on approach that makes the channels immediately accessible to the student in many ways. The best way to develop a deeper understanding of the channel system is through the practice Jingluo Qigong, which is included in this class.
