Tuina – Chinese Osteopathy and Bodywork
Tuina is the general term for Chinese osteopathy or Chinese bodywork. There are many schools of tuina with different techniques and methods. Some are gentle and some are rough. All of them make use of Chinese medical thought to understand the body in health and in illness.
Because the goal of tuina is to address illness and restore health a tuina treatment is far more than a massage, it is a powerful and effective form of primary health care. When used by a fully trained professional tuina can properly be described as Chinese Osteopathy. When used by lay people it can provide a simple and surprisingly effective way to help friends and family maintain health and wellness.
Our tuina system comes to us from Hsu Hongchi (徐洪基 ), our teacher Vince Black’s xingyiquan teacher. Master Hsu taught that to learn gongfu one also had to learn the medicine, with out medicine you could never be more than half a gongfu teacher. Because of this Chinese medicine and tuina have always been an essential part of our gongfu training and gongfu an essential part of our tuina training.
